Back in November, we reported that ‘Justice League – Part One’ would include an appearance by one DC female hero that has never actually served as a member of that team– Mera, the water-commanding fury that, in classic continuity, is Aquaman’s wife. Then in January, word came that ‘The Danish Girl’ actor Amber Heard had potentially been cast in the role, although Warner Brothers never made an official announcement. But Heard herself has spilled that yes, she is playing Mera and yes, she is in both ‘Justice League’ and the ‘Aquaman’ solo movie.
The film version of Mera is described as a mixture of Daenerys Targaryen (Khaleesi) from ‘Game of Thrones’ and Imperator Furiosa from ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’. The Khaleesi reference is of particular interest, as Aquaman himself will be played by Jason Momoa, best known for playing Khal Drogo on ‘Game of Thrones’, the husband of Daenerys.
‘Justice League – Part One’ is set to begin filming next month, and Heard has already had a costume fitting, although things aren’t finalized. While promoting her new movie ‘The Adderall Diaries’, she revealed:
“It’s fantastic… It’s interesting. It’s like, half suit of armor, half scales. It’s strange… We’re in the process of building it now, so it’s coming along.”
That sounds pretty accurate to the way the character is depicted in the comics! Mera hails from a parallel dimension and has powers similar to Aquaman– the ability to breathe on land or underwater, superhuman strength and invulnerability– plus has the added power to manipulate water, hardening it into various weapons.

Heard will next be seen in ‘London Fields’.
‘Justice League – Part One’ directed by Zack Snyder is slated to open on November 17, 2017, while ‘Aquaman’ directed by James Wan will swim into theaters on July 27, 2018.
