Sony’s adaptation of Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen’s hit science fiction comic ‘Descender’ has just found a writer in Jesse Wigutow (‘It Runs in the Family’,’The Prince’)! While he doesn’t have anything big on screen from the realm of science fiction or comic books quite yet, Wigutow has clearly been working in the genre. He is just finishing adapting Brian Michael Bendis’s ‘Fire’ and previously had written the screenplay for the untitled ‘Tron: Legacy’ sequel as well as an earlier screenplay of the upcoming ‘The Crow‘ reboot.
The comic itself is an ongoing series that is a space opera which gives us a humanity that is very anti-artificial intelligence. Bounty hunters are working to destroy anything robotic or android in nature and we follow TIM-21 who is a self-aware robot which has been living on a distant mining colony. When his existence becomes public knowledge, it isn’t long until a galaxy-wide robot hunt begins as many believe that he could inevitably be responsible for the galaxy being destroyed.
Sony had purchased the rights for adapting the comic a year ago without much visible traction happening though it looks as if the push to make this a reality is finally happening. Josh Bratman’s Immersive Pictures will produce with creators Lemire and Nguyen on board as Executive Producers. Palak Patel and Eric Fineman will be overseeing the project for Columbia.
