Based on what we have seen so far in the clips and trailers for ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice,’ it seems Ben Affleck might just have been the right casting choice to play the Dark Knight in Zack Snyder’s new film. And if he does work out on screen playing Bruce Wayne/ Batman, it seems that Affleck is also poised to potentially take the helm of his own solo ‘Batman’ film (rumored to be titled ‘The Batman’) in 2018. According to the man himself:
“I’ll just say going through the process, I would never have imagined that I could or would direct a movie like this. And in working with ‘Batman v Superman’ director Zack Snyder and seeing what he did and watching him every day, I got really inspired by that and by seeing the scope on which he was telling the story, by seeing what he was able to do with this kind of mythic story on a grand scale.”
Affleck has already had a number of directing triumphs in the past decade with hits like ‘The Town’ and ‘Argo’ which earned him awards recognition from the Academy of Motion Picture Sciences. And while his films may have been smaller in scale, they definitely did well for DC’s home studio, Warner Bros. And since ‘Batman’ of all the DC heroes is the most grounded in reality, Affleck could really stay in his own wheelhouse by doing a gritty crime drama with the character, which would require minimal special effects, which is the only aspect of a super-hero film that the man would be lacking experience with. But even that may have changed after working with Snyder on ‘Batman V Superman,’ as I am sure Snyder and Affleck had many conversations about crafting a super-hero film, and what is required to make it look good for modern audiences.
What are your thoughts on Affleck directing himself in a solo ‘Batman’ outing? Do you even think the current DC cinematic movies will be successful enough to warrant another film in Gotham City? Share your opinions below!
