Two years ago, NBC attempted to revive the live stage musical on TV to… well, less-than-stellar results with lackluster performances of ‘The Sound Of Music’ and ‘Peter Pan’, but this year they seem to have perfected the formula with the blockbuster success of ‘The Wiz’. Now it’s FOX’s turn. At the end of this month, they will broadcast a live performance of one of the most popular musicals of all time, ‘Grease’ with Julianne Hough, Vanessa Hudgens, Carly Rae Jepsen and Keke Palmer starring (with Mario Lopez as Vince Fontaine).
Then in the fall, the network will deliver another crowd pleaser, ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’! Two months ago, FOX delivered its first casting announcement, with ‘Orange Is The New Black’ breakout star Laverne Cox as Frank-N-Furter, the central role made famous by the impeccable Tim Curry in the film version.
Now two more important parts have been cast. Victoria Justice, best known for her Nickelodeon series ‘Victorious’ has been cast as Janet (dammit!) while Ryan McCartan (right), star of Disney’s ‘Liv and Maddie’ will portray her nerdy paramour Brad. Brad and Janet are the unfortunate couple who find themselves as the unfortunate houseguests of Frank-N-Furter after their car gets a flat tire in a rain storm.
Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon portrayed Brad and Janet in the cult classic movie. Justice and McCartan not only join Cox, but Reeve Carney (‘Penny Dreadful’) as Riff-Raff and Staz Nair as Rocky Horror (you know, the hunk in the gold shorts).
No air date is set for ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ beyond “Fall 2016″ but the show will be prerecorded for safety.
The show will be directed, executive produced and choreographed by ‘High School Musical’ mastermind Kenny Ortega. Gail Berman and Lou Adler, who produced the original film are also attached as producers.
More updates as they arrive!
Are you excited to see a new live (ish) performance of ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show?”
