Mark Hamill was a no-show, but most of the cast of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ were on hand for the film’s global press event last weekend. Director J.J. Abrams, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Gwendoline Christie and Lupita Nyong’o were among those in attendance for the panel hosted by sitcom star Mindy Kaling.
The panel is pretty lengthy and while the cast and crew couldn’t reveal anything too spoiler-y, they do offer some insight into their roles and at least tell you what not to expect. If nothing else, it’s fun to see the real actors enjoying themselves. Clearly they bonded over the course of making this film.
When Kaling pointed out Fisher’s famous sense of humor then asked if her character Leia also had a good sense of humor, Fisher replied, “She would have to. Wearing those hairstyles? I do now have a baboon-ass hairstyle … I mean that with love. So you need a sense of humor for that sort of thing.” Fisher also described her character’s overall appearance as “a classy gas-station attendant look. Well, look at it! Or, I would say I was an airplane mechanic, with a nice vest.”
Other highlights included:
- Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy assured “Jar Jar is not in the movie. Ewoks are not in the movie. Harrison insisted on it.”
- Nyong’o revealing that Yoda was her character Maz Kanata’s first love. “That’s a movie I want to see,” Kaling responded. Singer confirmed that Kanata and Yoda knew one another.
- Driver expressed that his character Kylo Ren may not be a cut-and-dry bad guy. He also described him by saying “He’s very unpolished and unfinished… [The movie] adds a recklessness and something un-neat about it that people don’t normally associate — with the Dark Side being very organized.”
- Christie stating that her character, Captain Phasma would return in future movies as well as expressing interest in playing ‘Captain Marvel’ is the proposed Marvel movie of the same name.
