With the release of the ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ poster this weekend, there has been a lot of speculation about the imagery seen on the poster (and not seen, conspicuously absent is an image of Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill). Most interesting is the inclusion of a massive armed space-station that looks a lot like a more modern version of the Death Star originally seen in ‘Star Wars: A New Hope.’ While some might say re-using the same idea from the original trilogy might seem silly and a little lazy, according to the official ‘Star Wars’ website, it seems this is not your father’s Death Star:
“An ice planet converted into a stronghold of the First Order and armed with a fiercely destructive new weapon capable of destroying entire star systems.”
So it is not a new planetoid made from scratch, it is actually a converted PLANET, which means it will not be so easily destroyed (nor should it be, really, especially if there are life-forms on the planet). And the idea that it can not only destroy planet, but ENTIRE STAR SYSTEMS definitely makes it a lot scarier than the original Death Star, and also explains why the First Order wields such power in the universe after the fall of the Empire. They could have been wiping out Resistance Strongholds for years, making sure the Rebel Alliance never got the strong hold on the galaxy it needed in order for peace and prosperity to return to the galaxy. Still, there are a lot of questions here, such as: Can the planet move? Or is it stationary? What kind of defenses does it have? Is there the equivalent to a thermal exhaust port that can be used to take it down?
What are your thoughts on the stronghold of the First Order and the magnitude of the weapon it holds? Is there a chance it is a bit of overkill, trying to make the new weapon better than the old Death Star? Share your opinions down in the comments below!
