Despite many years of resisting while simultaneously teasing his involvement, Bill Murray finally committed to appearing in another ‘Ghostbusters’ movie a few weeks ago. The former Dr. Peter Venkman will cameo in Paul Feig’s upcoming film starring Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Melissa McCarthy, and Leslie Jones supposedly as a “professional supernatural debunker” named Martin Heiss. But what exactly changed the veteran actor’s mind about taking the gig? He recently opened up about the project while promoting his latest film, ‘Rock the Kasbah’.
While speaking to Vulture over the weekend, Murray revealed that the people involved in the reboot were a big reason why he agreed to be a part of it. At first, he didn’t want to steal their thunder by taking part in the new ‘Ghostbusters’ because of how much he respects the the cast and crew. But when he saw that it wouldn’t be the case, he started to see other reasons to answer the call:
“You know, they were incredibly nice to ask me, and I really enjoyed being there. They have such a jolly group, and they are going to have great success with this project. I didn’t want to overshadow [them] or anything, and I feel really good about it. I like those girls a lot. I mean, I really do. They are tough to say no to. And Paul is a real nice fellow.
I thought about it for a very long time. Like, many, many months. No, that’s not right. I was seriously thinking about this for years, really… It kept eating at me, and I really respect those girls. And then I started to feel like if I didn’t do this movie, maybe somebody would write a bad review or something, thinking there was some sort of disapproval [on my part].”
At the end of the day, it’s just good to see that the original cast is giving the new ‘Ghostbusters’ their blessing. But it’s always good to see Bill Murray on the big screen, especially in something that his fans have been clamoring for him to do for years. Hopefully it lives up to the hype and we have another iconic supernatural comedy on the way.
