Superman has become like the Archie Andrews of comics… er, wait a minute. Um, well, the Last Son of Krypton is borrowing a page from the romantically impaired redhead from Riverdale and has found himself stuck in a trap potentially more dangerous than Kryptonite — a love triangle. And while Archie has to choose between two virtual goddesses, Betty or Veronica, Superman has to decide between a regular woman and an actual goddess, Lois Lane or Wonder Woman.
Through most of his 75+ year comic life, Superman has been romantically linked to fellow reporter Lois Lane. They were even married for many years, before DC decided to de-age their characters with the New 52 relaunch. Since then, the Superman/Lois pairing has been more adversarial than loving. But don’t feel sorry for farm boy Clark Kent. He found solace in the arms of a literal goddess, Wonder Woman, his power equal, making them the Brangelina of the Justice League set.
With Gal Gadot debuting onscreen in ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’, will that amorous debate spill over onto the big screen?
In ‘Man of Steel’ Amy Adams embodied Lois and set the stage for a romance between her character and Henry Cavill’s Superman/Clark Kent. How does Cavill feel about the situation?
First, Cavill was enthusiastic about the idea of Wonder Woman coming to life in the film, stating:
“Strong women are nothing new for the comic book world. I’m glad they are being represented a bit more in film and on TV. Wonder Woman has been around forever, she is an incredibly strong character. She can go toe-to-toe with Superman sometimes.”
But like any sane man, Cavill remained noncommittal when it came to picking between these two strong-in-their-own-way women:
“This is a very long discussion because there are a lot of questions to be asked and answered. I mean who is better for a super-powered alien, a human or a goddess? Yes, the goddess can do all the normal things, which we would think are normal in a relationship, and not have any fear of Superman. But you also need to have that baseline of humanity, which Lois provides. And literally keeps his feet on the ground, keeps him down to earth. So that’s more of a debate than an answer.”
At least Cavill doesn’t shy away from the fanboy debate as to whether or not Superman and Lois can even be intimate. But he is also wise to recognize that Lois provides something that Wonder Woman can’t, a grounding sense of humanity. Despite his alien origin, Superman was raised on a Kansas farm and endowed with good ol’ fashioned beliefs of humility and doing the right thing. Wonder Woman is also dedicated to the greater good, but considering that she was raised in a foreign culture and hobnobs with gods, she doesn’t quite share Clark Kent’s everyman mentality.
For her part, Amy Adams doesn’t seem interested in a romantic rivalry with Gadot’s Amazing Amazon. In 2013, she shrugged off the idea, stating “I hope that I can be involved with a woman on screen where we’re not in a love triangle. That would be fun. Maybe where we team up together and we work as teammates instead of adversaries… Wouldn’t it be nice if women weren’t always catfighting and stuff?”
Besides, Wonder Woman has her own romantic complications. Chris Pine will play her own human love interest Steve Trevor in her upcoming solo movie. Poor Gal, having to select between Henry Cavill and Chris Pine. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t, right?
It’s a debate that raged among fans for decades and we may or may not see a resolution in ‘Batman V Superman’. That may be for the best, because then what would there be to talk about?
What do you think? Should Superman pursue Wonder Woman or Lois? Which is a better match for the Man of Steel? Comment below!
