After spending time on multiple projects across a number of platforms, it finally looks like Guillermo Del Toro is gearing up for ‘Pacific Rim 2’. With the title rumored to be ‘Maelstrom,’ the sequel to the popular 2013 Jaeger vs. Kaiju epic has been said to focus on the two scientists played by Charlie Day and Burn Gorman. But that doesn’t mean that other fan favorite characters won’t be making a comeback as well.

While appearing at the Television Critics Association panel to promote the second season of ‘The Strain’ on FX, Del Toro clarified his previous statements regarding the upcoming sequel. Though the duo of Dr. Newton Geiszler and Dr. Hermann Gottlieb play big parts in the film, that doesn’t mean that other cast members like Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, or Ron Perlman will be sitting on the bench:

“No, no, no, Charlie Day has a great part but so does Charlie Hunnam. I think that everybody or most everybody that survived is back. The rest we killed. We killed half the cast.”

Sorry about that, Idris Elba fans. It doesn’t sound like Stacker Pentecost or any of the other deceased jaeger pilots will be back for another round. But hopefully we’ll be introduced to even more giant robots and the people who operate them.

Who are you most looking forward to see return in the sequel to ‘Pacific Rim’? Even though their characters are gone, do you think that there’s still a chance that we’d see Idris Elba, Robert Kazinsky, or any others that have perished in the first movie once again? Let us know your thoughts and theories in the comments below.

‘Pacific Rim 2’ is scheduled to hit theaters in August 4, 2017.
