It’s always fun to hear how some of your favorite movies came to be. Kevin Smith used his experience at a convenience store to make ‘Clerks,’ Cameron Crowe modeled ‘Almost Famous’ after his stint as a teenage reporter for ‘Rolling Stone,’ and apparently Zack Snyder first conceived the showdown between the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight as a joke.
According to an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the director revealed that the first time he pitched the idea for ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ to the architects of WB’s DC Cinematic Universe, he described an Easter egg for the ending of ‘Man of Steel’ to Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer:
“I said, ‘What about at the end of the movie we do a scene where there’s a crate full of kryptonite delivered to Wayne Manor’. Everyone was like…‘Okaay.’ Once you say it out loud it’s a problem because you can’t unsay it.”
Of course, we did end up seeing a Wayne Enterprises reference in the theatrical cut of Henry Cavill’s first film as Big Blue, but it wasn’t one as major as a crate of kryptonite popping up on the Caped Crusader’s doorstep. Something that big is being saved for the main event. That’s right! The reports that emerged back in June that spoke of Batman getting his hands on Superman’s major weakness have been confirmed as Snyder shared the arsenal that Gotham City’s finest is packing against the Last Son of Krypton in next year’s epic showdown:
“If you’re going toe-to-toe with the son of Jor-El, you better come correct. For his climactic rooftop brawl with Superman, Batman outfits himself with a reinforced mech-suit equipped with strength-augmenting armor and, yes, kryptonite. The design resembles the one used for the confrontation between these two in Frank Miller’s ‘The Dark Knight Returns’.”
With weapons like that, it sounds like we’re in for an all out war. But until we get another peek at the action, what do you think of the origin story of ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’? Are you excited to see how Batman’s gadgets hold up against Superman? Sound off in the comments.
‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ starring Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane, Jeremy Irons, Holly Hunter, and Jesse Eisenberg hits theaters on March 25, 201
