Despite starring in the Academy Award-winning film ‘Birdman,’ which contains some interesting criticism and commentary of comic book movies, Michael Keaton has lined up a comic book movie as one of his next projects. Though he’s not returning to the cape and cowl of Batman, he will be playing another force for good when he stars in an adaptation of BOOM! Studios’ comic series ‘Imagine Agents.’
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Keaton will produce and star in the film based on the 2013 book created by writer Brian Joines and artist Bachan that sounds like a mix between ‘Men In Black’ and ‘Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends.’ In the film, the actor will play a 20-year veteran of I.M.A.G.I.N.E., an organization that polices figments of imagination, as he mentors a young archivist. Here’s the synopsis for the comic series via BOOM!:
Ever try to wrangle an illiterate, 30-foot tall rock monster away from his 5-year-old best friend? Or calm down a 400 pound muscle-man rag-doll during her daily temper-tantrum? For Dave and Terry, it’s all in a day’s work. As agents for I.M.A.G.I.N.E., they are responsible for keeping your imaginary friends in-line… Little do they know that six-year-old Elliot and his best bear-friend, Furdlgurr, are about to be entangled in a plan to change everything!
With Keaton setting up ‘Imagine Agents,’ this marks the second BOOM! Comics project set up at 20th Century Fox this year. The first one was a live-action adaptation of ‘Lumberjanes,’ an acclaimed comic that follows five campers battling supernatural forces over a summer. While Will Widger is currently lined up to pen the script for that film, Fox is currently searching for writers to develop ‘Imagine Agents.’
