True Believers are always anxiously awaiting the next film set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Usually we’d have to wait a number of months in between Marvel Studios theatrical offerings, but we only had to wait a couple of months this year since ‘Ant-Man’ is hitting theaters a mere two months after ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ premiered. And while the likes of Hank Pym and Scott Lang aren’t exactly household names like Tony Stark or Steve Rogers, Disney and Marvel are doing everything that they can to build up the upcoming movie. So far, we’ve seen impressive posters, stills, and trailers full of action and heroics, however, one thing that wasn’t played up as much was the comedy. After all, with star Paul Rudd and Adam McKay writing the script, it’s bound to have it’s fair share of funny moments, right? Well, we finally get to see some more of that thanks to a new extended TV spot.
Though we have gotten small glimpses of gags here and there, the advertising strategy for Marvel so far has been to remind fans that ‘Ant-Man’ is coming from the studio who brought us epic superhero blockbusters such as ‘The Avengers’, ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’, and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ (which was also a fairly unknown property like this one prior to James Gunn’s critically acclaimed movie). But now it looks like the House of Ideas is taking a different approach in the latest bit of promotional material for the buggy brawler. Entertainment Weekly recently debuted a new ad for Peyton Reed’s upcoming Phase Two finale that primarily focuses on the comedic elements of the film. Check out Rudd charmingly do what he does best as he puts a smile on your face, albeit in a somewhat different way than we’re used to:
Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, master thief Scott Lang must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.
With Phase Two offering some unique takes on the comic book movie genre by presenting a political thriller, a space opera, and whatever you describe the awesomeness of ‘Iron Man 3’ as, ‘Ant-Man’ looks as if we’re getting yet another twist on a classic superhero origin that’s more of a heist comedy. We’ll see next month whether that combination works for the latest member of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, but until then, share your thoughts on the new commercial below.
‘Ant-Man’ starring Michael Douglas, Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, and Corey Stoll flies into theaters on July 17, 2015.
