After all the drama with directors dropping out, big pushes to meet the big anniversary of the show, and whole changes to the story and the original script, fans were excited to hear that the creative forces behind ‘Star Trek’ had enlisted the writing talents of Simon Pegg onto the latest draft of the script, a task that to Pegg at least, seemed a bit daunting at first.
Of course, now he seems to be in the groove of it, and he and his fellow writers are taking the series in a new (yet tried and true) direction, opening up the current ‘Star Trek’ universe, which to this point has stayed pretty close to Earth. In his own words:
“…I think we just want to take it forward with the spirit of the TV show. And it’s a story about frontierism and adventure and optimism and fun, and that’s where we want to take it, you know. Where no man has gone before – where no one has gone before, sensibly corrected for a slighter more enlightened generation. But yeah, that’s the mood at the moment.”
I enjoy the idea of taking the concept back to the ideas behind the original TV show, because it seems to me that is what made ‘Star Trek’ fun, the frontier escapism, exploring the farther reaches of space to find new life, new ideas, new worlds, spreading the bright light of a peaceful humanity to cultures across the stars. While the JJ Abrams films were fun, they were more about establishing the new reality, and big action set pieces, and war, none of which particularly defined ‘Star Trek,’ which makes sense as they say those films were basically Abram’s resume for doing ‘Star Wars.’ The Federation itself is not necessarily an army or military, which bothered a lot of Trekkies seeing the last two films, so it will be good to see the crew doing more exploration and adventures more in line with the original show.
