We all know that the wickedly creepy Samara is set to return in ‘Rings‘ and now we’ve found out a bit on what the film is about! Director F. Javier Gutiérrez (‘Before the Fall’) left the reboot of ‘The Crow’ to make the film and everyone has been expecting a follow up or reboot to the franchise. It seems fitting that they would bring this horror icon to the modern world using newer technology. Only, there is another direction it seems they are going with the film. It is starting to sound like ‘Rings’ is actually going to be a prequel.
Yes I’m scratching my head at that one too since we were pretty clearly told what should have been her origin story in the first two films. In fact, I’m not sure how much more of that they could actually flesh out without completely running on overly familiar ground unless the prequel is what they are using to reboot the franchise. Currently the film is said to be set years before the first two films and show us “the origin of Samara’s reign of terror.”
With the screenplay having been touched by a few contributors at this point including Jacob Aaron Estes, Akiva Goldsman, and David Loucka I’m pretty curious why so many have had be involved in penning the script. I’m also curious as to how they can create an origin story that would be interesting after everything we already know about the character.
We know that Matilda Lutz (‘The Fifth Wheel’,’Somewhere Beautiful’) will be playing Samara in the film so if this truly is a prequel there is a good chance we’ll see Samara as both human and the demonic entity that she ends up becoming.
Do you feel that a prequel, a sequel, or a reboot is the route that they should actually be going with the movie? Share your thoughts below!
