Earlier this week, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. officially announced the cast of David Ayer’s ‘Suicide Squad’, which includes Will Smith as Deadshot, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as the Enchantress, Tom Hardy as Rick Flagg, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, and Jared Leto as the Joker. Currently, the search continues for the right person to play Amanda Waller, but while that goes on, we might have just gotten a few clues about the film’s plot.

Fans that have read the source material know that the Suicide Squad AKA Task Force X is a team of incarcerated supervillains who that take on high-risk black ops missions for the US government in exchange for commuted prison sentences. But seeing as there have been many incarnations of the team over the years, no one can be really sure which direction they could be going with. Thankfully, some people in the know have taken to Twitter to tease us all with clues that we will no doubt overanalyze like crazy. First, director Ayer started with something simple:

Then, DC Entertainment CCO (and celebrated comic book writer in his own right) Geoff Johns gave us a reading assignment that might hint at the film taking a page out of John Ostrander’s 70-issue run on the series from the late 80s and early 90s:

Judging by these clues, it looks like the film won’t stray too far from what we know about the team. However, there might be a little something more in Johns’ clue. This is only a theory and I have nothing to back this up, but what if the Suicide Squad is tasked with catching the Joker after the events of ‘The Killing Joke’ where he leaves Barbra Gordon crippled? After all, Ostrander introduced the former Batgirl as Oracle for the first time during his time on ‘Suicide Squad’, but we don’t even need to see her until the sequel. This movie could be all about Task Force X capturing the Joker. That way, it would better explain the Clown Prince of Crime’s involvement in the movie since it wouldn’t make sense to have him on a team when he doesn’t exactly play well with others. And then that would tie in Ayer’s clue as well since these extremely vicious and psychotic individuals might actually do some good by apprehending the biggest baddie that they possibly could.

Of course it’s all merely speculation at this point on my part, but there may end up being validity to my theories. Until they’re proven though, do you have any theories of your own about the plot of ‘Suicide Squad’? Do these tweets from Geoff Johns and David Ayer give you any hints whatsoever?
