While we know that Guillermo del Toro (‘Hellboy‘,’Pan’s Labryinth’) is working on ‘Pacific Rim 2‘ we haven’t had many solid details as to what to expect in the film though today’s news hints at two characters which we’ll see returning to the big screen. Previously del Toro has said we won’t be getting some of the main characters right off the bat because he’s “going to shoot ambitiously and say ‘Let’s hope we have three movies.’ So some characters come in at the end of the second, hoping that it will ramp up on the third one.”

For those wondering which character we will and won’t see, it’s been hard to say but now it sounds like the two we know for sure that will be in the sequel are Charlie Day (‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’,’Horrible Bosses’) and Burn Gorman (‘The Dark Knight Rises’,’Layer Cake’) who will reprise their roles as Dr. Newton Geiszler and Gottlieb respectively.

Recently during an interview about the upcoming disc release of ‘The Strain,’ things of course fed into the sequel to ‘Pacific Rim‘ and he gave a few plot details as well as this casting information.

It’s a few years after the first one. It’s not an immediate follow-up. It is the world having been freed of Kaiju, what happens to the world after – what happens to the Jaeger technology once the Kaiju are not a threat. It’s quite a jump.

It’s quite a different movie from the first one in that, but I think that two of our main characters like in the first one are Burn and Charlie. They are really, really – I mean, honestly, they are probably the guys I have the most fun writing along with Hannibal Chau so just from a purely selfish drive, I like writing them. I love writing for Charlie and Burn. I mean, [Burn’s] in Crimson Peak for that reason, because I love working with him. You’re gonna get a lot of that, but the Kaijus are very different and you’re gonna see a very different type of the robots I think. It’s gonna be quite a different adventure.

With years having passed, we have a ‘Pacific Rim’ animated series that will be released to bridge the gap between the first and second film. Also with limited returning stars we’re not seeing any word of Charlie Hunnam’s ‘Sons of Anarchy’,’Children of Men’) Raleigh Becket or Rinko Kikuchi’s (‘The Brother’s Bloom’,’47 Ronin’) Mako Mori. I suspect that they won’t show up again until the end scenes or even the third movie unless the studio intervenes.

Are you looking forward to a movie that won’t be straight on giant robot and monster fighting to continue the world introduced in ‘Pacific Rim’? Do you think that Charlie Day and Burn Gorman will be able to carry most of the movie? Share your thoughts below!
