Almost half a year ago Bryan Singer said that he was interested in having ‘Gambit‘ appear in ‘X-Men Apocalypse‘ and now Channing Tatum has an update of the spin-off movie that producer Lauren Shuler previously told us about.
With how poorly ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine‘ did both with fans and at the box office, you think they might be looking to give us Gambit in another fashion. You’d be pretty wrong on that account as by Tatum’s own words we’re getting an origin story first.
“We’re finding a writer and sort of beating it out. We really do want to try our hardest to give something fresh. We’re obviously going to go to the saving the world superhero movies eventually, but not for the first one. We kind of want to introduce this character in a very different way, and when you try to do something different, you never know, right off the bat, what that is. It takes a little time to get it right. We’re really just feeling our way, and we have to prove that concept of that person.”
I’m assuming we’re going to see how he became a master of thieves as well as growing to deal with his mutant powers. Also if he is showing up in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ as Singer initially hinted at, you would have to expect this film to take place in the early 70’s or late 80’s if it will truly be an origin story. That could prove fun to see this Cajun not just in New Orleans but a New Orleans where disco or 80 pop or rock were also starting to show up. There’s a lot of potential for fun there.
What are your thoughts on our introduction to ‘Gambit’ being an origin film? Has Fox learned their lessons from ‘X-Men: Origins: Wolverine’ or are we going to see a train wreck of epic proportions when the film is released in a few years?
‘Gambit’ comes to theaters in 2017.
