It looks like Cobra will be returning with ‘G.I. Joe 3’ without a delay as the next film has just picked up a new writer! People may have been worried that ‘G.I. Joe 3’ was going to be delayed with Jon Chu (who directed ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation‘) having left to work on ‘Jem and The Holograms,’ but Paramount is pushing forward!
First on their to do list is to find a writer for the film. So who will be scribing ‘G.I. Joe 3’? While rumors have been circling that Evan Daugherty (‘Divergent‘, ‘Snow White and the Huntsman‘) would be taking over the project, it looks as if the film is actually going to be written by Jonathan Lemkin (‘The Devil’s Advocate’, ‘Red Planet’).
While we don’t know anything about the story line, it does appear that Lemkin will have a clean slate to work with. According to sources, Dwayne Johnson will return as Roadblock and be the main character. It is also suspected, though not confirmed, that Adrianne Palicki will return as Lady Jaye. Past that, I’m sure the studio and Hasbro have a few ideas for input as well.
With Lemkin’s only previous screenplay involving the military was the Mark Wahlberg vehicle ‘Shooter,’ maybe Lemkin can find a way to include Wahlberg in this film so that the actor can be in both the ‘Transformers’ and ‘G.I. Joe’ franchises thus become the living embodiment of 80s toys everywhere.
At this time there is no director attached to the film but Paramount is still creating a production schedule for it. They must either be in talks with one already or are pretty confident they can easily find one once the logistics are figured out. With the plan being to start production on the movie in the second quarter of 2015, there should be still enough time to get one lined up.
What do you think about Lemkin involved with the series? Who do you think would make for a good director on the film? Which Joe’s would you want to see included this time around?
