We’ve known for awhile now that Stephen Colbert loves ‘The Hobbit’ and that he was rumored to have a cameo in the second film in the trilogy. Now that rumor has been confirmed!
Wait, Stephen Colbert was in ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug‘ you say? Self proclaimed ‘America’s most famous Catholic’, defender of all things truthy, member of the 1%, and “World’s Biggest” Spider–Man fan has indeed landed himself a role in the film! It was a very large role as well that landed him about 4 second of on screen time! So, maybe not quite that large and definitely not as a Dwarf as the above image might lead you to believe.
Here’s his official announcement of his cameo made when he appeared on the ‘Late Night with David Letterman’ show in early December:
So where exactly is that scene? Well it was quick, as I mentioned above, and with the funny man not wearing his regular glasses. He was, however, wearing an eye patch and his hair was covered with a hood, so it would be an easy miss.
Thankfully someone put up the scene on imagur for us to enjoy:
Not familiar with the scene? Well it’s right as the dwarves are initially sneaking into Laketown. Colbert plays one of the spies watching Bard and his son walk through the town. Right as Bard and his son pass the lookout, the eye-patch buy turns his head and it falls down to signal the next lookout. Mr. Eye patch is indeed Mr. Colbert.
According to his IMDB credits, Colbert is also going to be making an appearance in the ‘The Hobbit: There and Back Again‘ and hopefully we’ll see him on screen at least a little longer. I’m also hoping he gets at least a line of dialogue while still sporting that oh so trendy patch (which he should wear at his earliest opportunity the next time he’s on ‘The Daily Show’).
Did you catch Colbert’s cameo without the help or was this a fun piece of news to you? Hoping he’ll have a slightly longer role in the next film? Share your thoughts below!
