Despite the film’s low rating from our own movie reviewer and a very few others, Alfonso Cuaron’s ‘Gravity’ earned some pretty high marks from critics during it’s opening weekend. Even names like James Cameron, Buzz Aldrin, and notorious Debbie Downer Neil deGrasse Tyson spoke highly of the incredible space drama starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. Furthermore, besides receiving such high praise, the director’s first film in seven years achieved the distinction of becoming the biggest October opening in history.

According to Deadline, the movie is “exceeding all expectations” after it took in a total of $55.5 million domestically and in 27 different foreign markets including Russia, Taiwan, Spain, and Germany. The intense IMAX 3D experience has yet to open in other big markets such as Brazil, Mexico, the UK, and Japan, so the big will only continue to get bigger.

Not only was ‘Gravity’ the biggest opening during the month of October, but it’s also the biggest openings for stars Bullock and Clooney, who have both been in some pretty big movies in their careers. As for the director, this is the second largest opening for Cuaron after ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’.

Currently, this film is one of the best reviewed releases of 2013 and there’s a good amount of award buzz surrounding it already. Even the people who disliked it admit that at the very least, the visuals were absolutely stunning, so hopefully the Academy recognizes the amazing imagery depicted in ‘Gravity’.
