Everything that J.J. Abrams gets involved in is usually surrounded by a good bit of mystery. From ‘Lost’ to ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ to ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’, each one kept the filmmaker’s fans in suspense for as long as he could allow it. Now, a new video has been released by Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions on YouTube that teases an upcoming project.

In the video titled ‘Stranger’, a raspy voice narrates over some eerie black and white footage. At the end of the video, the message “Soon he will know” slowly disappears one word at a time. You can check out the mysterious teaser below:

At first, many thought that this was for a collaboration between Bad Robot and Valve for a new video game, but it is actually believed to be for a novel by Doug Dorst and J.J. Abrams. Bleeding Cool pointed out the similarities between the font from the video and the font from an advertisement for the book called ‘S.’, which comes out on October 29, 2013. You can see the comparison here:

If this new trailer does have something to so with the upcoming novel, then this information should shed some light on what to expect from it:

“At the core of this multilayered literary puzzle of love and adventure is a book of mysterious provenance. In the margins, another tale unfolds—through the hand-scribbled notes, questions, and confrontations of two readers. Between the pages, online, and in the real world, you’ll find evidence of their interaction, ephemera that bring this tale vividly to life.”

If you ask me, this whole thing sounds pretty wild. From the creepy trailer to the implied interactivity almost at the level of Damon Lindelof and Brad Bird’s ‘Tomorrowland’, ‘S.’ sounds like an unprecedented reading experience that takes the choose your own adventure genre to a whole new level.
