My inner 90s geek has just rejoiced. One of my all time favorite comics from my teenage years was Todd McFarlane‘s ‘Spawn’. While a movie was made in 1997, I’m pretty sure we’re all in agreement that we are pretending it never happened. So why am I excited? Jamie Foxx wants to see ‘Spawn’ re-created and wants the job! I’d say that’s a really good reason to be excited!

First up, for those unfamiliar with the comics, who exactly is Spawn you may be asking? Spawn was originally a soldier that worked for the US government who went by the name of Al Simmons. In life, he was a trained assassin but also a man of honor. In death, he sold his soul to the devil in order to have a chance to return to Earth and see his wife again. As usual, bargaining with the devil doesn’t work out too well and he returns to Earth as a Hell Spawn to be trained as a general in Satan’s war on Heaven with only a fraction of his memories intact. The story, in short, is his fight to reclaim both his soul and the love of his life.

Back to Foxx’s comment, generally when an actor wants a role it’s little more than that. However, when an actor also is a producer and has the star power of Jamie Foxx and wants a role? That’s when it’s time to perk up and listen to what he’s saying. With his horror anthology for Syfy pushed back a year, it’s only fitting that he has his eyes set on other projects.

That being said the exact quote is a little light on substance for the time being as all he said was:

Spawn is one, yeah. And Mike Tyson. Those are two roles I would just love to do. I’m aggressively pursuing them.

That lone probably isn’t that much but what happens when you combine it with an interview McFarlane gave to MTV earlier this year where he said:

I continue writing pages here and there. I have a guy waiting in the sidelines, an Academy Award-winning actor. Every three weeks he’s on the phone going, ‘Todd, where’s the script? Todd, where’s the script?’ I can’t say who it is. You could [narrow it down]. He came out to the office. He gave me his pitch, and I gave him mine. The pitch I gave was that we could do ten of these for the next ten years and he wouldn’t have to be 22 for the rest of his life.

Well that puts a completely different slant on things. I could see Jamie Foxx absolutely picking up the role of Spawn. Now that he has played Electro in the upcoming ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2‘, he has comic book credit under his belt. I’d personally love to see him use that to transition from not just a Marvel franchise but my third favorite Image franchise as well. (‘Spawn’ used to be at the top though has fallen behind Robert Kirkman’s ‘The Walking Dead’ and ‘Invincible’ in recent years.)

How about it? Are you ready for a ‘Spawn reboot’? Would you be up for seeing Jamie Foxx taking the lead?
