Earlier this summer, shortly after completing her scenes in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’, it was revealed that Marc Webb made the decision to cut Shailene Woodley’s character, Mary Jane Watson, from the upcoming superhero sequel. Instead, she will be introduced in a future Spider-Man film and likely recast. When the announcement was made, we heard Webb’s side of the story, but now we hear from the actress and her thoughts on being taken out of the game.
While promoting her upcoming film ‘Divergent’, Woodley spoke to Movies.com about why MJ was taken out of the film and what the fate of the character’s future is. Check out her extremely professional and very classy answer to a less than ideal situation:
While I was one of those people who were extremely critical of the casting of Woodley in the first place, I came to accept it and saw that they were going with a different version of Mary Jane. Then, when this news of the omission was announced, I couldn’t help but be a little disappointed. But after hearing both Webb and Woodley talk about it and realizing that it’s better than pulling a ‘Spider-Man 3’ and packing the film with new characters, I’ve come to terms with this being a good decision. Plus, maybe her scenes will find their way onto the DVD release of the film.
