In an industry that relies on reboots and sequels, Alfonso Cuarón’s ‘Gravity’ is indeed in a class by itself. While other original works are heavy on the action (such as ‘Pacific Rim’ and ‘Elysium’), ‘Gravity’ is being described as an adventurous thriller of cinematic imagery. Whether this is an apt description will be up to you as we have the first trailer for you to see.

‘Gravity’ has had to overcome a lot of obstacles in order to get into theaters. At one point, Robert Downey Jr. and Angelina Jolie were once attached to the movie but when Jolie bowed out, the studio underwent a frantic search to find a replacement. Once Sandra Bullock signed on, the announcement that George Clooney would be starring opposite her soon came.

However, from what’s been said from those who have already seen the film, the bulk of the movie will be on Bullock who plays Dr. Ryan Stone. She and alongside fellow astronaut Matt Kowalsky (Clooney) must race against time fighting for survival and trying to find a way back to Earth when satellite debris decimates their spaceship and the rest of the crew onboard while they were on a routine space walk.

The visual effects from the trailer are amazing and while the film’s release date was pushed back a few months to work on these effects, the wait was well worth the time. It can easily be seen why this film is worth seeing in 3D.

This is definitely a film that has a high concept plot and is reminiscent of the films ‘2001 Space Odessey’ and ‘Apollo 13’ in terms of pacing and tone. Interestingly enough, Ed Harris who was the voice of NASA Flight Director Gene Kranz in ‘Apollo 13’ and helped bring the space capsule back is also the voice of the film’s mission control personnel trying to get Dr. Stone back. Would this film be one that could give him an Oscar nod for basically the same role?

With high action sequences being the appeal to mainstream audiences, hopefully ‘Gravity’ will be able to grab enough of an audience’s interest for it to be successful at the box office. Take a look at the trailer and let us know what you think in the comments below, on Facebook or on Twitter!

Synopsis :

Sandra Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney) in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone–tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth…and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.

‘Gravity’ opens in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D October 4th.
