After some trouble behind the scenes, Legendary Pictures’ new film ‘Godzilla’ got back on track early this year when Frank Darabont took one final pass on the script. Shortly after that, stars such as Aaron Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, David Strathairn, and Bryan Cranston boarded film and now it has entered the production phase of the process on location in Vancouver, British Columbia. But along with the announcement of the production’s commencement, it appears that a new cast member has joined the already impressive cast.

According to the press release that can be found at Collider, Ken Watanabe of ‘Inception’, ‘The Last Samurai’, and ‘Batman Begins’ will join the previously announced cast members in the iconic movie monster’s return to the big screen. Considering that Godzilla is traditionally found to be terrorizing Japanese cities, it’s nice to see a Japanese actor land a role in the reboot of the franchise.

No details have been released about Watanabe’s role, or anyone else’s role for that matter, but the rumor is that Johnson will be playing a soldier, Olsen will play his girlfriend, Cranston will play her stepfather, and Strathairn will play a military leader.

In addition to the press release, a video from director Gareth Edwards was released online as well as a brief hello to commemorate the beginning of filming, but it still counts as our first look at the set. You can check that out below:

Finally, there are a few photos from the set available for your viewing pleasure as well, courtesy of Comic Book Movie. You can see those below, though they don’t really show off much of anything except the anticipated military involvement in the plot:

Despite knowing next to nothing about the character, what do you think about Ken Watanabe joining the cast of ‘Godzilla’? What do you think of our first glimpses of the set? Sound off in the comments.

The new ‘Godzilla’ is scheduled to hit theaters on May 16, 2014 in 3D.
