Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim’ didn’t have a Super Bowl ad showing but that doesn’t stop the excitement that comes with these new official photos from the film that are now on the web. The images come courtesy of USA Today and gives some great new teasers to the Jaegers in the film.

Pacific Rim’ pits 25 story tall man made robots (known as Jaegers) against equally sized alien creatures (referred to as Kaiju) that rise from an inter-dimensional rift in the Pacific Ocean and threatens the Earth. According to the article, del Toro’s relates his film to a Western comparing the pilots as riders, Jaegers and Kaiju as gunfighters and the Jaeger station as the Alamo:

Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and other Jaeger pilots are deemed “riders,” and when they move in the suits to put their machines in motion, “we made it a point to put the sound of spurs like a cowboy,” del Toro says.

The Jaeger station is “basically the Alamo,” del Toro says, and there are rangers and marshals within it — most notably Marshal Stacker Pentecost, a spiritual, moral leader played by Idris Elba. “He’s not playing second banana. He’s at the center of the conflict. He’s the only guy who cannot give up.”

The director likens the face-offs between Jaegers and Kaiju to a pair of gunfighters in a duel — although the monsters come packing more than just a six-shooter. One of them shoots corrosive lava out of his mouth.

The screenplay for ‘Pacific Rim’ was written by del Toro and Travis Beacham and when asked if he had a favorite mecha or alien, del Toro responded that although “they are like my children,” he is drawn to the Kaiju outlaw Leatherback. “I find him very, very endearing,” says del Toro. “He has a big belly so I identify with him. He’s no doubt my main man.”

‘Pacific Rim’ is slated to hit theaters on July 12th.
