Of the Millarverse titles, ‘The Secret Service’ is the Mark Millar story appearing in the news a bit lately (mostly because of it’s director’s potential involvement in the new ‘Star Wars’ movie), however, another Millar creation is currently being adapted for the screen in the form of ‘Kick-Ass 2’ thanks to Jeff Wadlow and company in Toronto and the UK.
In a recent interview with Comic Book Resources, the ‘Kick-Ass’ creator revealed that the fan-favorite under-aged ass-kicker, Hit-Girl, would be featured more heavily in the sequel to Matthew Vaughn’s 2010 film. Previously, we knew that part of the purple-haired heroine’s miniseries from Millar and John Romita Jr. would be appearing in the new film, but now we know about how much. When talking about the comic’s end and the film’s beginning, the writer said:
“The thing was always planned as a 12-issue story broken into two parts, but they each have to stand in their own right. You can read one and not have to read the other, but when you go and see the movie, it’s basically Hit-Girl for 45 minutes and then an hour of ‘Kick-Ass 2.'”
Since ‘Hit-Girl’ takes place between ‘Kick-Ass’ and ‘Kick-Ass: Balls to the Wall’, it only makes sense that the in between shows up in the new movie so we can see how characters continued on after the credits rolled.
Then, when trying to explain what the end of the miniseries is like, Millar compares Hit Girl to a certain teen movie icon that just needed a day off:
“[Hit Girl’s adoptive father] Marcus is like a regular person having a tiny Punisher living with him, and I kind of like that. If I can compare this to anything, I guess it’s ‘Ferris Bueller’ – the whole story where Ferris is off doing cool shit all day while the parents think he’s home sick. That was a big inspiration for the ‘Hit-Girl’ series – the idea that she’s trying to live an ordinary life while doing something spectacular. There’s even a scene where Marcus and Hit-Girl are both rushing home, and she’s trying to prove that she’s been there all day and that she’s not really Hit-Girl. This will all be shot for the movie, and I wonder if people will catch that nod.”
Featuring returning stars Aaron Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse and newcomers Jim Carrey, Donald Faison, Robert Emms, Lindy Booth, John Leguizamo and Morris Chestnut, ‘Kick-Ass 2’ hits theaters on June 28th, 2013.
