‘Cloud Atlas’ has pretty much been under the radar and that’s pretty suprising considering it was written, directed and produced by the Wachowski siblings, Andy and Lana, in partnership with Tom Tykwer. The trio have adapted the mind-bending novel ‘Cloud Atlas’ written by David Mitchell for the big screen and we now have the first look at a few of its stars: Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, and Ben Whishaw
The hard to describe story involves 6 actors playing 6 characters each through 6 time periods across 6 geographies (yes, it is a lot of 6’s!). In the images supplied by EW, Hanks plays a man who meets a woman (Berry) from an advanced culture. The second image shows Broadbent as a composer with his student (Whishaw).
If the premise sounds a bit complicated and obsure, the synopsis may help:
“Cloud Atlas is an epic story of humankind in which the actions and consequences of our lives impact one another throughout the past, present and future as one soul is shaped from a murderer into a savior and a single act of kindness ripples out for centuries to inspire a revolution.”
This is a very large undertaking for the Wachowskis and I’m really hoping they can pull it off. The book has the advantage of being able to go deeper in the story and characters via verbage and translating it on screen should be a challenge.
We’ll get to see the final result when ‘Cloud Atlas’ hits theaters on October 26th.
