In the last issue of ‘Secret Avengers’, we saw the return of Captain Marvel from the dead, and he was on a new mission: Kill the Avengers. He even recruited Miss Marvel and The Protector to aid him in his cause. In this new issue, despite being an AvX tie-in, we got some Avenger vs. Avenger action when the trio of Kree warriors attacked the Secret Avengers as they tried to recuperate from their encounter with the Phoenix Force.
First of all, it’s important to note that this issue takes place before the events of ‘Avengers’ #26. I was confused a bit when the action from this title started spilling over into the main Avengers title, but all was cleared up when I noticed that note. Well, not exactly all, but rather some.
Now that that’s settled, what I find interesting about this arc now is why Captain Marvel is back and who put it in his head that he needs to kill the Avengers. If one was to speed read through the issue, you’d miss forget about the first page and look past some of the more nuanced moments that would lead you to believe that someone else is pulling the strings here. And not only the strings of Mar-Vell, but all the Kree on Hala, including Noh-Varr and Carol Danvers, as well.
Since we get a glimpse into the future that doesn’t include Captain Marvel (at least not yet) in ‘Avengers’ #26, I’m on board with this series right now to see if Captain Marvel ends up sticking around for the long haul or going back to the land of the dead.
