Deadpool, Marvel Comics’ Merc with a Mouth, has never been a character for doing usual stories and he may soon be doing one of his most unusual yet. He is one of Marvel’s most popular characters and it seems like next year, we can change that to say “He was…”. In ‘Deadpool’ #50, which will be released in February 2012, Marvel says that they will be killing off the character. The issue, written by Daniel Way and illustrated by Carlo Barberi, features the cover seen below which shows the grim reaper holding Deadpool in his arms.
I have to agree with the sign. It is about time Marvel readers got a break from Deadpool. Like Wolverine (another character that I wouldn’t miss if he joined Deadpool in the afterlife for a while), Deadpool has been everywhere in the Marvel Universe for the past few years. I’ll admit to not being a big fan of the character but, even if I were, I think I’d have to admit that he’s been a bit overused of late.
But, like DC’s Lobo, Deadpool is often an overly violent comedy book, so I wouldn’t doubt that he will be back in the world of the living before long just like Lobo did in the early 90s in ‘Lobo’s Back’. Will Marvel have the nerve to keep Deadpool dead? Even in light of the inevitable fan backlash that will come if they actually kill him in the first place? Find out in February!
