Genre films took 3 of the top 4 spots this past weekend at the box office including ‘Green Lantern’ in the top spot.

Warner Bros./DC Comics’ $200 million ‘Green Lantern’ took in $53.1 million for first place. Industry experts placed the opening in the $60-70 million range even after the distributor lowered its expectation for the extraterrestrial extravaganza. With the $200 million budget and $100 million in marketing, it seems unlikely ‘Green Lantern’ will turn a profit. Especially given that fans seem to be giving the film a big thumbs down.

The retro-science fiction film ‘Super 8’ took in a respectable $21.4 million for its second weekend in theaters. The film’s current worldwide gross is $81.6 million and gives the film the opportunity to cross the $100 million line this week.

Marvel’s ‘X-Men: First Class’, dropped from second to fourth, but took in another $11.9 million bringing its’ domestic total to $120.3 million and its’ worldwide box office total to $282.4 million. The film should beat the first ‘X-Men’ film’s total of $296 million and pass the $300 mark in the next couple of weeks.

Disney’s ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ dropped to eighth place taking in $6.6 million. ‘On Stranger Tides’ has now grossed $952 million worldwide and has become Disney’s biggest grossing film outside of the U.S. with $731.9 million. I think there’s a chance we’ll see another sequel.

Marvel’s ‘Thor’ took in an additional $1.1 million to place twelfth. It’s now taken in more than $435 million at the worldwide box office.
