It seems that Caity Lotz is coming back to ‘Arrow’ as Sara Lance (aka the White Canary) once again this season, and this time she will not just be briefly seen during some documentary style footage as they did during the 150th episode. She will return in a ‘Birds of Prey’ inspired episode in which she will be one of the three Canaries on the series, the others being the Earth-2 Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy Rodgers) and Dinah Drake (Juliana Harkavy). Word comes to us from show-runner Beth Schwartz, who initially spoke about the episode with TV Line by saying:

“We are doing a Birds of Prey-inspired episode, that Laurel (played by Katie Cassidy Rodgers) will be involved with.”

Next, Schwartz posted on Twitter a picture of the script for the episode, which we now know will be episode 18 for the season, along with three different Black Canary figurines, which you can check out below:

Of course, traditionally, the ‘Birds of Prey’ in the comics is usually the Black Canary with Oracle (Barbara Gordan) working with a rotating roster of female superheroes, with most people thinking of Huntress initially as the third member of their team, which may be because there was a ‘Birds of Prey’ TV show in the early 2000’s in which the roster was Black Canary, Oracle and Huntress.  ‘Arrow’ has paid homage to the ‘Birds of Prey’ before with Sara Lotz as the Black Canary, Felicity as the stand-in for Barbara Gordan’s Oracle (but doing the same thing, being the computer whiz quarterbacking the situation), and having ‘Arrow’s’ version of Huntress complete the team.

This new episode seems to be making the team all Canaries, though the point has been brought up that at this point in time, none of them are actually the Black Canary (at least not the one we know from the comics). Sara is the White Canary now, and even then, she was never the Black Canary in the comics, that title was always held for Dinah Laurel Lance. Plus, Sara never had the Canary Cry. Laurel is not really Laurel, since she is the Laurel of Earth-2, and is actually Black Siren, not Black Canary. Dinah comes the closest, but after her recent injury, she may not even be capable of doing the Canary Cry anymore, which many see as a staple of the character (though in the comics she went decades before that power was introduced). It will be interesting to see how this episode works, and what the point of it is, though I suspect it MIGHT be about Earth-2 Laurel taking the mantle of Black Canary since she is the only one with the Canary Cry now, with Sara there to give her blessing and encouragement.
