Well, let’s take this with a grain of salt folks, because this particular rumor is coming to us from Cinemablend by way of Reddit, where they are quick to point out that this potential title is also the name of a ‘Star Wars’ pinball machine which is also licensed to Lucasfilm. But anyways, according to the source at Reddit, who claims to be privy to the source code at the official ‘Star Wars’ website, the title of ‘Episode IX’ is going to be ‘Balance of the Force.’ Not a terrible title, and fitting for a movie that intends to wrap up 9 movies worth of storytelling with ties to a prophecy in George Lucas’s prequels, the life and death of Anakin Skywalker/ Darth Vader and his son Luke Skywalker, and the fate of the both the Jedi and the Sith, who represent the light and dark sides of the Force, who the balance is all about.
Again, this title is most definitely not confirmed, and there is every chance in the world that this is nothing more than the title of an old pinball machine that someone thought worked really well for ‘Episode IX.’ Other reasons this may not be the title include the fact that it does focus rather heavily on that prequel prophecy, a plotline not really featured all that much in this new trilogy with Rey and Kylo Ren, and potentially not something J.J. Abrams wants to shoehorn into a movie with so much riding on it, especially when the prequels are not held so near and dear to the hearts of most hard-core fans (who Disney most likely wants to bring back into the fold after the disastrous ‘Solo‘ release, and the mixed results of ‘The Last Jedi.’)
Also, as detractors on Reddit have pointed out, ‘The Last Jedi’ title was hinted at in the opening crawl of ‘The Force Awakens,’ with the words “The last Jedi” literally in the crawl, while “Balance of the Force” is not in the opening crawl of ‘The Last Jedi,’ which could point at the title of ‘Episode IX’ being something else that was featured in text of that crawl (some are positing it might be ‘Spark of Hope’ which does hearken back to ‘A New Hope’).
But, for all its problems, ‘Balance of the Force’ does have a note of finality and well, closure to it that this final chapter of the Skywalker saga needs, so I would not be surprised if this does turn out to be the title.
