There had been some hope that ‘Black Panther’ might win the Golden Globe for Best Picture – Drama, but it was always a long shot and it, unfortunately, didn’t pan out.  The fact that it was ONLY up for Best Picture but no other category was a pretty clear sign that this wasn’t going to be the year for a comic book movie to land that major accolade. The only other award it was up for was Best Song for ‘All the Stars’ by Kendrick Lamar featuring SZA, but that also lost out to ‘Shallow’ from ‘A Star Is Born’ performed by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper.

In the Motion Picture category, ‘Black Panther’ was bested by ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, a film that was panned by critics, but that proved to be a huge hit anyway, with leading man, Rami Malek winning Best Actor – Drama for his portrayal of legendary rocker Freddie Mercury.

Fantasy movie ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ which was classified under Comedy/Musical was also shut out.  In the Picture category, it was bested by ‘Green Book’, while Emily Blunt was bested for Actress by Olivia Colman, the star of ‘The Favourite’.

Ultimately, the only major genre win was for ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’, the visually stunning origin story which won for Best Motion Picture – Animated, triumphing over ‘Incredibles 2’, ‘Isle of Dogs’, ‘Mirai’, and ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet’.  In a genre-adjacent win, Justin Hurwitz took home Best Score for ‘First Man’.

There weren’t very many genre nominations in the television arena, to begin with, but the few there were– for ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ and ‘Outlander’… and ‘The Good Place’ if you want to count that– didn’t win.

The Golden Globes can be viewed as a decent predictor of the Oscars, but the correlation between the two is sporadic at best.  The Oscar nominees for this year will be announced on January 22, so we just have a few weeks until we find out if ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ will get recognition from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
