While Fans Have Been Calling Thanos Big Win "The Snappening", Marvel Has Given It Another Name

Much of the Internet has been calling the big win by Thanos in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ either “The Snappening” or “The Snap” but now Marvel Studios has given the event an official name. Watching The Avengers actually lose was bad enough but for the result to be half of the population of the entire universe get wiped out was even more tragic. Especially, when so many of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, as well as the Guardians of The Galaxy, also suffered the same fate.

As no official name for the event had been shared in the film, it was up to audiences to come up with their own. With it all happening from Thanos snapping his fingers, that was the keyword which ended up being used. However, Brandon T. Snider’s ‘The Cosmic Quest Volume Two: Aftermath’ young adult tie-in novel has changed that. It doesn’t put too much of a focus on what happened after Thanos wins but what we do learn is that The Avengers don’t share what happened with the public and that the event is being referred to as “The Decimation.”

While Earth is grieving, it isn’t clear to the majority of the populace what happened and how close the team came to stopping The Mad Titan. While this is a tie-in novel, Marvel Studios has held very tight control over what can go into any related material, so it is very likely that this will be the canon name for the franchise. Whether we hear it spoken out loud before The Avengers undo the events of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ is another story entirely.
