Fox

20th Century Fox just released a new poster and trailer for ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ which touted that the film would be released on February 14, 2019.  You may recall that ‘Dark Phoenix’ was originally supposed to arrive in November of this year.  Well, the wait just got even longer as Fox has pushed it back again, to June 7, 2019.  On February 14, Fox will instead release ‘Alita: Battle Angel’ which was originally supposed to come out on December 21st of this year.  In that place, Fox is instead releasing a just-announced PG-13 ‘Deadpool’ movie.  Fox isn’t revealing anything about that picture, but many believe it will be an edited version of ‘Deadpool 2’.

Meanwhile, ‘New Mutants’, which was supposed to come out this past April, is still locked in for an August 2, 2019 release.

Remarkably, still on the books is ‘Gambit’, which Fox has now scheduled for release on March 13, 2020.  This flick has been in the works since 2014, ever since Channing Tatum expressed interest in playing the Cajun mutant.  But the film has languished in development hell since, going through multiple scripts and directors.  The most recent draft is said to be a “romantic or sex comedy.”  Rupert Wyatt, Doug Liman, and Gore Verbinski have all been attached to direct but each has walked away.  There is no one currently set to helm this movie and at this point, I’ll believe it when I see it.

With Disney’s purchase of Fox and all of its assets, it seems like only a matter of time before Marvel Studios takes over the ‘X-Men’ brand and folds those characters into its shared universe.

‘New Mutants’ and ‘Dark Phoenix’ are essentially finished products just waiting to be released.  But it’s hard to imagine that Fox is going to bother putting together all new ‘X-Men’ movies when those characters will probably be rebooted completely by Disney.
