We’ve been learning more about ‘Captain Marvel‘ as of late but how Coulson and Fury are involved is still a mystery. That being said, Clark Gregg has teased that this latest outing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will show how his Agent Coulson and Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury will first meet. When we first were introduced to Coulson in ‘Iron Man’ the actor shared that “This isn’t my first rodeo, Mr. Stark” and in ‘Captain Marvel’ it looks like we might be experiencing Coulson’s first rodeo. Gregg confirms this stating that “This might be the rodeo. It’s one of them, for sure.”
When portraying a younger Coulson that has yet to meet Nick Fury, Gregg had a few difficulties to overcome having played an evolving character for all these years:
“There was something really special about going back to the early days when he was just kind of coming up the ranks. I had to take innocence workshops and go back to when he was a little less crusty and jaded!”
To tackle this younger take on the character which he’s embodied for years throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Marvel’s ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Gregg wouldn’t give any real details but did jokingly share that:
“He’s a relatively new S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who is obsessed with MC Hammer and dresses just like him, and it makes Director Fury so angry. The genie pants don’t really go with the Armani.”
While he’s clearly kidding around here, I suspect that some of Coulson’s thoughts on being a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent might not line up with Fury’s at the start. When they do meet though, Gregg feels that it is a “meet-cute moment” but added that “I don’t think Sam will put it that way.”
