Brie Larson Captain Marvel

It’s a wrap for ‘Captain Marvel’, the next film in Marvel Studio’s slate.  Production began in January and wrapped on July 6.  To mark the occasion, star Brie Larson posted an image on Instagram, of a clap board signed by the cast and crew with a calendar on which the wrap date is circled.

‘Captain Marvel’ will be the last non-sequel in Marvel’s Phase Three and leads into ‘Avengers 4’ (which is hopefully incorrectly, reported as being called ‘Endgame’).  Larson’s Carol Danvers is expected to take the reigns as the leader of the Marvel Universe going forward into Phase Four.  The current hit, ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ is the first Marvel Studios picture with a female hero’s name in the title, but ‘Captain Marvel’ will be the first with ONLY a female hero’s name as the title.

Her solo movie was directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, with a script that they worked on, along with Liz Flahive, Meg LeFauve, Carly Mensch, Nicole Perlman, and most recently Geneva Robertson-Dworet.  In addition to Larson, the cast includes Jude Law as Walter Lawson/Mar-Vell, Gemma Chan as Doctor Minerva/Minn-Erva, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, Djimon Hounsou as Korath the Pursuer and Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser.  Ben Mendelsohn‘s role is undisclosed, but he is believed to be playing Yon-Rog, the villain of the picture.  Lashana Lynch‘s role has also not been revealed, but she may be playing Monica Rambeau, another Marvel hero that has used the codename Captain Marvel in the past.  Annette Bening was a late addition to the cast but is believed to be playing Carol’s mother.

VERY little has been revealed about ‘Captain Marvel’, but based on the comics, Carol Danvers is an Air Force pilot who becomes involved in the work of a group of scientists who turn out to be spies from the alien Kree empire.  Through some means– it’s called the Psych-Magnatron in the comics and I’m pretty sure that is NOT the name they will use in the film– she develops superpowers after her human DNA is spliced with that of the Kree.

She becomes able to fly, gains super strength and the ability to absorb and release energy.  She also develops a powerful form of “women’s intuition.”  It’s kind of like Spider-Sense.

Concept art has surfaced depicting Captain Marvel charging into battle with the Avengers in ‘Avengers 4’, giving fans an idea of what the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe holds.  But maybe after this movie, Carol will be front and center in the next bit of promo art.

‘Captain Marvel’ will arrive in theaters on March 8, 2019.
