Geoff Johns And Patty Jenkins Tease When 'Wonder Woman 2' Will Take Place

DC Comics CCO Geoff Johns and ‘Wonder Woman’ director Patty Jenkins appear to have revealed the time setting of ‘Wonder Woman 2’. Johns posted the above logo on his Facebook account, while Jenkins made it the background of her Twitter home page. We already knew that the sequel to Jenkin’s massive superhero hit would be set in the 1980s during the Cold War, but now we know that it will specifically take place in 1984.

That year has a special place in science fiction history, as it was the title of George Orwell’s groundbreaking dystopian novel, which spawned the phrase “Big Brother is watching you”– a slogan that seems more relevant now than ever.

Wonder Woman was more prominent in 1984 than she would be for many years. She was included in the massive Kenner toy line ‘Super Powers’ which spawned a slew of licensed tie-in merchandise. That fall, the long-running Hanna Barbera cartoon rebranded itself as ‘Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show’. Wonder Woman was redesigned, losing her old eagle symbol and adopting her now famous “WW” logo, which had been introduced in the comics in 1982.

And though it may be a coincidence, in 1984 ‘Supergirl’ became the first female comic book star to get her own live action movie. What else of significance happened that year?

She rebounded by becoming a best-selling singer (‘Save the Best For Last’) and in-demand actor (‘Ugly Betty’). She is also the only Miss America who anyone can name or identify.
Bob Geldof assembled the biggest pop stars in the UK as Band Aid to release the single ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ after the world became aware of the extreme famine in Ethiopia.
