wonder woman 2

DC Comics CCO Geoff Johns and ‘Wonder Woman’ director Patty Jenkins appear to have revealed the time setting of ‘Wonder Woman 2’.  Johns posted the above logo on his Facebook account, while Jenkins made it the background of her Twitter home page.  We already knew that the sequel to Jenkin’s massive superhero hit would be set in the 1980s during the Cold War, but now we know that it will specifically take place in 1984.

That year has a special place in science fiction history, as it was the title of George Orwell’s groundbreaking dystopian novel, which spawned the phrase “Big Brother is watching you”– a slogan that seems more relevant now than ever.

Wonder Woman was more prominent in 1984 than she would be for many years.  She was included in the massive Kenner toy line ‘Super Powers’ which spawned a slew of licensed tie-in merchandise.  That fall, the long-running Hanna Barbera cartoon rebranded itself as ‘Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show’.  Wonder Woman was redesigned, losing her old eagle symbol and adopting her now famous “WW” logo, which had been introduced in the comics in 1982.

And though it may be a coincidence, in 1984 ‘Supergirl’ became the first female comic book star to get her own live action movie.  What else of significance happened that year?

  • Ronald Reagan was re-elected as US President in one of the biggest landslides in history.
  • Sarajevo, Yugoslavia hosted the Winter Olympics.  Los Angeles hosted the Summer Olympics which were boycotted by the Soviet Union because of that pesky Cold War business.
  • In addition to the Cold War, the US and Soviet Union were locked in the Space Race.  From the US, the space shuttle Challenger took its 10th journey into space, while the Discovery made its first.  Aboard the Challenger, Marc Garneau became the first Canadian in space.  Bruce McCandless II and Robert L. Stewart took the first untethered space walk.  While on the Russian side of things, Svetlana Savitskaya became the first woman to make a space walk.  Shortly after, Kathryn D. Sullivan became the first American woman to perform one.
  • Iran accused Iraq of using chemical weapons.  President Ronald Reagan condemned their use and called for an international ban.
  • The Provisional Irish Republican Army bombed the Grand Brighton Hotel in an effort to assassinate British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.  Unfortunately, Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her two Sikh bodyguards.  The Indian people rioted, killing 10-20,000 Sikhs.
  • Apple introduced the Macintosh, making home computers affordable and desirable.  Later that year, Tetris was introduced resulting in millions of hours wasted over the next several decades.
  • ‘Terms of Endearment’ won the Academy Award for Best Picture, among other honors.  But in news about movies you’ve actually seen, both ‘Gremlins’ and ‘Ghostbusters’ were released.
  • Liechtenstein granted women the right to vote, becoming the last nation in Europe to do so.
  • Beverly Burns became the first woman to pilot a Boeing 747.
  • Vanessa Williams was the first Miss America to turn in her crown after nude photos of her surfaced and were published in ‘Penthouse’.  She rebounded by becoming a best-selling singer (‘Save the Best For Last’) and in-demand actor (‘Ugly Betty’).  She is also the only Miss America who anyone can name or identify.
  • Bob Geldof assembled the biggest pop stars in the UK as Band Aid to release the single ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ after the world became aware of the extreme famine in Ethiopia.  Speaking of England, they officially returned Hong Kong to China.  In other musical news, Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Born In The USA’ and Madonna’s ‘Like A Virgin’ were released.
  • Crack cocaine hit the streets and the streets were never the same.
  • Chrysler released the first minivans and the suburbs were never the same.

Will these events factor into the plot of ‘Wonder Woman 2’? We’ll have to wait and see.

Jenkins will return to direct the sequel, which will star Gal GadotKristen Wiig joins to play The Cheetah.  It will be released on November 1, 2019.
