andy serkis gollum

There are plenty of rumors swirling around Amazon Studios take on ‘Lord of the Rings‘ and Gollum actor Andy Serkis was again asked about returning to the series. From Amazon Studios rumored to be wanting Peter Jackson to being involved, to using some of his prior sets and CGI, to even having the series be a compliment to the films, we’ve really heard it all.

When the actor was last asked about any possibility to join the production, he said that he doesn’t “imagine” that he’d want to return or even be asked. In the latest round, he doubles down on this view stating:

“Oh boy, listen, I mean…I don’t think so. And if I was anyone making those, they’re obviously going to want to start fresh and create something brand new. And that’s how it should be. That’s what you do with great, classic pieces of work. Like [The Jungle Book]. It bears repetition, and it bears reinterpretation. And I think it needs a fresh pair of ears and eyes, and I’m sure that’s the way they’ll go.”

The actor is open for ‘Lord of the Rings’ to have the story fleshed out even further as there was plenty left out from the films but he isn’t interested in being part of the production. While one of the rumors has the new show being a compliment to the movies, I don’t think anyone expects that to happen.

Yes, we may get plenty of stories about other eras and areas of Middle Earth but fans are going to want to tune in to see J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic tales, and outside of diehard readers most of the audience won’t know much beyond ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings.’

On the flip side, another rumor has the series following a young Aragorn which would make an appearance by Gollum not even all that feasible. If they went that route though, Ian McKellen has already offered to reprise his role as Gandalf which is one part that would fit here.

Are you glad that Andy Serkis isn’t interested in joining Amazon Studios’ ‘Lord of the Rings’ or do you find it hard to see the studio not wanting to draw in from the previous hit? Do you hope that this will only be new stories or do you think expanding on the pre-existing ones with material which hasn’t previously been seen is the way to go? Share your thoughts below!
