Jessica Chastain X-Men Dark Phoenix

RUMOR/SPOILER ALERT: This article contains information that is strictly RUMOR at this point, but could also potentially be a SPOILER if it turns out to be true, so take things with a grain of salt and proceed with caution.

Jessica Chastain’s role in ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ has been kept heavily under wraps.  It was revealed that this character was cosmic in some way and is a shapeshifter.  Chastain herself denied that she was playing Shi’Ar empress Lilandra, an alien character that debuted during the ‘Dark Phoenix Saga’ in the comic books and who also ended up as Professor Charles Xavier’s love interest.  But now a rumor has surfaced that indicates that Chastain is playing a more startling character.

The latest rumor is that Chastain’s character is Miss Sinister, a gender-swapped version of the X-Men’s shape-shifting enemy Mister Sinister.  Having the ability to shift his mind between different bodies, Sinister has appeared as a female in the past.  Sinister, Nathaniel Essex, has always had a deep interest in the lives of Scott Summers and Jean Grey and after Jean was seemingly killed during the ‘Dark Phoenix Saga’ Sinister cloned her.  This clone was named Madelyne Pryor and manipulated circumstances so that Scott would meet and fall in love with her.  They got married and had a son, who ended up eventually becoming the time-travelling adventurer Cable.  Sinister intended for Cable to eventually murder his rival Apocalypse.

Nathaniel Essex was teased as an upcoming villain in a post-credits stringer in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse‘.  Miss Sinister originally went by the name Claudine Renko before it was revealed that Essex’s psyche was housed in her body.  There were rumors that Essex/Sinister would be the villain in ‘Logan’ but he was not.  But the groundwork is laid for some version of the character to enter the film universe.  Since we know that ‘Dark Phoenix’ won’t be a direct adaptation of the comic book story, the use of Sinister as the villain could work.

But keep in mind this is just a rumor at this point.  What do you think?  Would you like to see Miss Sinister in ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’?

‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ was recently pushed back to a release date of February 14th, 2019.
