Wayward Pines

While Fox hasn’t made it official as of yet, a network insider has shared that it is “unlikely” that ‘Wayward Pines’ would return for a third season. As the second season finished airing almost two years ago, it is more of a surprise that we haven’t just heard about a cancellation at this point. The sophomore season dropped 37 percent in ratings from the first outing, and there has been no word one way or another that the show would make a come back.

Over the summer, Fox president David Madden wouldn’t confirm their direction:

“M. Night [Shyamalan] has talked to both [Fox CEO] Dana [Walden] and me recently about the possibilities of what a third season could be. So we’re going to be sitting down with him [to discuss] his thoughts and potential story ideas, casting ideas. So we haven’t made any kind of decision yet, but we are talking about it.”

If this insider is correct, the story and casting ideas apparently didn’t pan out.

I know that studio execs all still love M. Night Shyamalan and hope that he can recapture the magic of his early career, but it just hasn’t been happening on the small screen. Besides, with how busy he is working on ‘Glass‘ after the success of ‘Split,’ it seems television wouldn’t be at the top of his To-Do list.

With the end of the second season hinting that an Abby-free future might not be in the cards for humanity, there were plenty of stories left to explore in a far-flung future. The odds had looked to be in favor of humankind but could now be drastically stacked against the survivors and it might be another new race that will be discovered when they emerge.

Now, we’ll likely never know.

Are you sad to hear that we won’t be getting a third season for ‘Wayward Pines’? Does it make any sense that almost two years have passed without a substantial update one way or another having been revealed? Share your thoughts below!
