Joanne Whalley – Marvel

‘The Defenders’ closed out with Matt Murdock gravely injured and now we’ve learned that Joanne Whalley is joining the upcoming season of ‘Daredevil‘ as Sister Maggie to help nurse him back to life. This furthers the idea that the upcoming season of this Netflix hit is going to be heavily leaning on the 1980’s “Born Again” story arc from the comics though it is unclear how faithful to the source material that they’ll remain.

Almost anyone familiar with the comic probably felt that with ‘The Defenders’ having the last line be “Get Maggie. Tell her he’s awake” that it would go this route, but this seems to further that assumption.

Sister Maggie is “a strong-willed nun who speaks her mind and cares deeply about Matt’s safety.” She also has a very close connection with the Man Without Fear and is actually directly related to Matt, even though that won’t be instantly clear to the hero. The series may also stray away from that connection though it seems unlikely. After a similarly close call to Matt’s life, Sister Maggie ends up nursing Matt to full strength and getting his head back in the right place to continue his fight for justice.

At this time she joins a cast which will consist of Charlie Cox who is reprising his role as our blind hero, Vincent D’Onofrio who is back as The Kingpin, as well as regulars Deborah Ann Woll who plays Karen Page and his partner in law Foggy Wilson played by Elden Henson. She’ll also be joining newcomer Wilson Bethel.

According to Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer and Marvel’s Head of Television:

“We are big fans of Joanne’s work and are fortunate that someone of her caliber will be joining our already talented family.”

While Erik Oleson, ‘Daredevil’s new Showrunner and Executive Producer added:

“Joanne is a rare talent and a terrific creative collaborator. Watching her bring her role to life has the writers all pinching ourselves.”

The first Netflix Marvel series broke the mold for the company, and top-notch action and acting have paved the way to their interconnected shows. With talent like Whalley’s stepping up I’m sure that we’re going to be in for another treat in the upcoming season.
