Spider-Man: Homecoming femme fatale

Tom Holland isn’t getting much chance to catch his breath!  Once he completed ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’, he went almost directly into playing Peter Parker in the two upcoming ‘Avengers’ movies, which shot back-to-back.  ‘Avengers 4’ just wrapped and now comes word that principle photography on the ‘Homecoming’ sequel will begin this spring in either Germany or the United Kingdom.  Last month, we learned that a French actor had submitted an audition for the role of Gwen Stacy.  Now it seems that producers are seeking a European female actor in her 20s to play a “femme fatale.”

Now the character Gwen Stacy doesn’t really fit that description, but this could be a new twist on the character, possibly inspired by the parallel universe adventurer Spider-Gwen.  Or it could be a different character.  Obviously the person that immediately comes to mind when “European femme fatale” is mentioned is Silver Sable.  She is going to be featured in ‘Silver & Black’ along with Black Cat.  But the question as to whether that movie will take place in the same continuity as the ‘Spider-Man’ films continues to linger.  The upcoming ‘Venom’ was supposed to take place in its own reality, separated from ‘Spider-Man’ (which is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe), but the latest word is that Holland’s Peter Parker will appear after all.

If there is indeed going to be a connection between the ‘Spider-Man’ movies and the spin-offs, then it is possible that the character being cast is Silver Sable, or even Black Cat for that matter.  But if that were the case, you’d think Gina Prince-Bythewood, the director of ‘Silver & Black’ would be involved in casting these two starring roles.  (Then again, maybe she is…)

Another remote possibility is Jessica Drew, the original Spider-Woman.  Though she is really only connected to Spider-Man by name, she could potentially be woven into his story a bit more tightly in the films.  She is a popular character in her own right and though it is often glossed over, she was raised in Europe in the bizarre Wundagore Mountains.

Spider-Woman played a huge role in the ‘Secret Invasion’ storyline, in which Skrulls kidnapped and impersonated several Marvel heroes.  The Skrulls are being introduced in Marvel Studios’ ‘Captain Marvel’ film and the plot of ‘Avengers 4’ is being kept under wraps.  But some fans speculate that ‘Secret Invasion’ may be an inspiration for this film and if so, this could be a tidy way to bring Jessica Drew into the story.  But that’s just a guess.

It’s also possible that the film could gender-swap an existing male character.

Do you have any guesses as to who this mysterious European femme fatale could be?

The as-yet-untitled ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ sequel will be directed by Jon Watts, with a script by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.  Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, along with Zendaya and Jacob Batalon.  The film is slated for release on July 5, 2019.
