superman

We previously heard that Warner Brothers was considering making ‘Superman: Red Son‘ as one of its non-DCEU stand-alone movies and now it sounds like an animated feature is in the works. With DC having such a mix of quality and reception to their live-action works in recent years, this is almost something I sighed in relief about. I’m very excited at the concept of this making it into a cinematic adaptation but am not quite sure I’d have wanted to see whatever the studio ended giving us.

Producer Bruce Timm mentioned that this was a possibility after a recent Q&A to share details on their other Elseworlds release which we’re all excited for, ‘Batman: Gotham by Gaslight.’ He didn’t give any specifics on this actually happening but was vocal that he hoped to be able to tackle the project.

For those unfamiliar with ‘Superman: Red Son’ here is the official synopsis of the fan-favorite graphic novel which gave us an entirely different look at the Man of Steel:

Imagine a reality where the world’s most powerful super-being does not grow up in Smallville, Kansas – or even America, for that matter…

SUPERMAN: RED SON is a vivid tale of Cold War paranoia, that reveals how the ship carrying the infant who would later be known as Superman lands in the midst of the 1950s Soviet Union. Raised on a collective, the infant grows up and becomes a symbol to the Soviet people, and the world changes drastically from what we know – bringing Superman into conflict with Batman, Lex Luthor and many others.

Also in this take on Superman, we see appearances by Wonder Woman, Braniac, Green Lantern, Lex Luthor, and Batman. There is a lot going on throughout the book which gives us what a Communist Superman would have meant for a drastically changed world. In fact, it addressed a few of the ideas which ‘Watchmen’ did such a good job at taking a look at.
