We were just given the first shot of ‘Bumblebee’ which shows the iconic Autobot as a VW bug in his new movie, and now Paramount Pictures has released the official synopsis of the film! The image came with the teaser that the film was “just a beautiful love story between two broken souls who find each other and heal each other” and now we seem to have confirmation that this will be a bot and human who bond in the film. It should also be noted that director Travis Knight had previously said that he “grew up loving those classic Spielbergian Amblin films” which has me very interested in the tone that the first non-Bay Transformers movie will have.
The first synopsis describes the movie as:
On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.
BUMBLEBEE is produced by TRANSFORMERS franchise veterans Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Michael Bay, along with executive producers Steven Spielberg, Brian Goldner and Mark Vahradian. Chris Brigham (ARGO, INCEPTION) will also executive produce. The screenplay is written by Christina Hodson (UNFORGETTABLE).
Directed by Travis Knight (KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS, CORALINE), the film stars Hailee Steinfeld (EDGE OF SEVENTEEN), Pamela Adlon (BETTER THINGS, LOUIE), John Cena (DADDY’S HOME 2, TRAINWRECK), Stephen Schneider (Comedy Central’s BROAD CITY), Jorge Lendeborg Jr. (SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING), Jason Drucker (DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: THE LONG HAUL), Kenneth Choi (AMERICAN CRIME STORY), Ricardo Hoyos (DEGRASSI: NEXT CLASS), Abby Quinn (LANDLINE, THE SISTERHOOD OF THE NIGHT), Rachel Crow (DEIDRA & LANEY ROB A TRAIN), and Grace Dzienny (ZOO).
Clearly, they are giving more details on the cast and crew over the actual plot. It is hard to say if we’ll see Bumblebee be going up against Decepticons at all though I doubt that the movie will lack in any action. While Transformers fatigue may have kicked in from what Bay was doing, we’ll still want to see some giant robot fighting occurring on the big screen.
