After the tragic loss of Carrie Fisher, questions have been popping up as to the fate of General Leia in ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ and beyond. Early commentary had her having a role in the upcoming film but that the final installment to this trilogy would place her front and center. Rumors swirled that her shooting wasn’t finished for this one which were thankfully shot down, however, there were more rumors that some of her scenes were changed to reflect her absence going forward.

Now, we’ve learned from director Rian Johnson that nothing was changed for Fisher’s work on ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’. Her story in the next installment will be complete and it won’t be until the still unnamed ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’ which her fate will be revealed and story come to a close.

You have to feel bad for J.J. Abrams who must find a way to either use existing footage, go the CGI route, or give us a reason as to why everyone’s favorite Princess has passed off screen.

This information came from Johnson himself who was asked in a recent interview if Leia’s story was kept how it was originally penned where he responded that:

“We didn’t end up changing a thing. Luckily, we had a totally complete performance from her.”

The director who has been given the chance to tackle a new non-Saga trilogy in the near future had grown close to Fisher while on set said of the actress:

“You got to experience a little bit of that magical sphere that she created. I’m happy I got to poke my head into that, briefly, and know her even a little bit.”

You almost have to wonder if the last portion of this trilogy will begin with Leia’s funeral and having her pass while off-screen. There are a ton of ways that Lucasfilm and J.J. Abrams can go and it seems unlikely that any of them will make all moviegoers happy. According to Abrams on her absence for what they have planned in the last film:

“It’s a sad reality. In terms of going forward … time will tell what ends up getting done.”

Hopefully, how they decide to handle it will do the franchise and late actress justice.

Are you happy to hear that Leia’s story wasn’t altered to have it come to a close in ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’? How do you think they’ll give her character closure in the final chapter? Share your thoughts below!
