Just like ‘Star Trek: Discovery‘ over at CBS All Access, we’ve just learned that ‘The Orville‘ was picked up for a second season on Fox! The series is boldly going where no other Fall 2017 series has gone before by being the first to be picked up for a second season.
This isn’t too much of a surprise with the critical praise which has been heaped on the show combined with the fact that Seth MacFarlane has had a few hits on the network including the likes of ‘Family Guy’ and ‘American Dad’. Oh, and the ratings haven’t hurt either. The series has had the second most eyes on it after any new series past ABC’s ‘The Good Doctor’. It’s done that by getting 6.7 million viewers with a 2.1 rating among adults 18-49 on Thursday nights. Outside of the Friday death spots, this has been one of Fox’s worst performing days and timeslots which should speak volumes to the show’s appeal.
On top of this, the 13-episode run which ends in December also stands unique as the norm these days on Fox would be to extend the first season by ordering more episodes and hope for a second season after that concludes. It’s hard to tell if MacFarlane was dead set on ending the season where it was, if production issues would have prevented them from jumping into the second half of an arc, or if there was an entirely different reason for the network to hold off on episodes.
Either way, it would have been highly illogical for the series to end so soon.
