shazam

If you’ve been wondering what director David F. Sandberg (‘Lights Out’,’Annabelle 2′) was reading for inspiration on his take of ‘Shazam‘ then we’ve got you covered. The director is actually digging pretty deep into the character’s history and is going back to the very beginning and reading it all. Yes folks, Sandberg wants to be true to character and is tackling every piece of ‘Shazam’ material that he can get his hands on! We could be seeing stories pop up from any era of this iconic superhero.

“I’m just taking it all in. Some of those really old ones are quite fun, when he’s like fighting Hitler and stuff like that. He’s been around since the [1940s], for like as long as Superman. So there’s a lot to read.”

Going through the character’s entire history means that he can not only cherry pick story lines that he’d prefer to see but also how Billy Batson even ends up becoming a hero in the first place:

“And that’s also interesting because he sort of has a couple of different origin stories, a couple of different takes on it. You have the most recent, sort of Geoff Johns version, and then you have the [Jerry] Ordway version, and then you have those really old versions.”

With Johns being slightly influential in how the DCEU is structured, it wouldn’t surprise me if a nod to his version was given, although if Sandberg does vastly prefer another iteration, it clearly wouldn’t be off limits. With the film not due until 2019 and so much of it still unknown, it’ll likely be quite some time until some of these details get ironed out.

Which origin do you want ‘Shazam’ to have in the film? Are there any major plots which you’d like to see on the big screen? Share your thoughts below!
