We might have quite some time before ‘Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen‘ ends up being released, but director Neil Marshall is being open about a few venues of his development process for the film. Specifically, he recently spoke about how he was planning on using practical effects to craft the look of the film and what having an R-Rating has done for the entire film from the offset.
While practical effects are always appreciated by moviegoers who are sick of the overuse of CGI in Hollywood, Marshall has had huge successes using them in the past. From his work on ‘The Descent’ and possibly my favorite werewolf film of all time, ‘Dog Soldiers,’ his talent is a shining beacon that many will be looking forward to.
Marshall shared these details on Mick Garris’ Post Mortem Podcast with how he is adapting the new cinematic version of Mike Mignola’s creation. When talking about the special effects for the film, he stated:
“It’s definitely going to be as practical as we can possibly make it. I love to do stuff in camera whenever I possibly can, and use CG as the amazing tool that it is, to enhance or expand upon the world, but not to use it to replace reality, when you can do it [for] real.”
If you’ve seen the teams which Marshall has worked with in the past then you’ll know that this is just fantastic news. As to how the rating of ‘Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen’ would shape how they would make it:
“We’ve been granted permission to do it R-rated, which for me is just like taking the cuffs off. It’s like, okay, so now we can just make the movie we want to make. It’s not like I’m going to force it to be R-rated, but if it happens to come out that way, just because of my own sensibilities, then fine. And nobody’s going to stop us. So, that’s the main [difference]. And I’m sure, obviously, the success of things like Deadpool and Logan have not hurt that cause. But, also, when you go back the original material, it is kind of bloody, so I’m going to embrace that.”
Now, Marshall isn’t one who has overdone gore with his work in horror. While he does describe earlier Hellboy as “kind of bloody,” I don’t think that those who are against gore for gore’s sake will have to worry here. With shooting rumored to begin this Fall, we’ll hopefully have some behind-the-scenes shots to check out by the end of the year. With Marshall’s love of practical effects, that also means the shots will show the characters fully formed or nearly so to give us an actual feel for the film!
